Why Are Lens Hoods So Expensive

Hi all

Just wondered why genuine lens hoods are so stupidly expensive?

Lost mine from a kit lens and ended up buying a secondhand lens plus hood cheaper than I could get a new hood for on its own

Sold the lens on and got the hood for not much at all

Any one know the reason?

Cheers
Rich

I suspect it's because the manufacturer knows they are easily lost or broken so applies a large mark up. It was the same for car parts. Some years ago I bought all the gears, shafts, and internal housings to rebuild a Renault 17 diff. Some weeks later a paid 3 times as much for one moulded rear light lens cluster. Guess which one gets broken most?

Reckon you could well be right there Barrie.

My old Mk2 Cavalier needed a new distributor cap, cost a small fortune for a Vauxhall part. Apparently after three years the drawings have to be released and I bought a copy for a fraction of the genuine part price.

Obviously a good way to make profit is on bits that need replacing fairly regularly or get easily lost or damaged

Hood prices have come right down recently... but the lens price has shot up

Crazy prices - anyway I order one through here -

Does not really look used, just waiting on the 55-200 from a local shop.
