Thanks Mannesty, I'm glad it's not just me being rubbish, I was happy with taking a shot in the prevaling conditions with the card and correcting from that in PP, but it was the in camera thing that threw me, I assumed I could use the grey card for that too. Well, you learn something every day.
I'm still clueless about why you can set the 'White' balance in PP either using something properly white or 18% grey, but I giuess some things will always be 'magic' to the likes of me!
Great pictures, by the way.

Isn't it simply that you're having your PP s/w adjust to a 'known' value which is either white or grey?
The bit I don't get is what it adjusts but I'm too lazy to find out and given the state of my memory I'd proably forget anyway.

Thanks Mike. I was pleased with the result, especially having never encountered such poor and variable lighting conditions. I was itching to use a flash but that was not an option. Some of the horses didn't even like us being close to them, a flash would have sent them crazy.Mannesty - nice horsey shots. You obviously coped with the condition!

My son has regular work from the TVRC and he's really looking forward to the summer when the events will be held outside. Shame he's only got a Canon though. I tried to bring him up proper, and obviously failed.

It's not just you, believe me. The more and more I think I know, the more and more I realize I don't.but I guess some things will always be 'magic' to the likes of me!
I'm happy to use the magic bits and just accept that they work. I don't need to know how.
