Which printer?

As my 8-year old Epson Stylus Photo is rather past its best now, what options would you recommend as a replacement?

Price up to £250 or so - possibly considering the Epson R800.

Both Epson and Canon allow you to upload a photo which they'll then print out and send to you (normally within a few days).

I went for a Canon IP4000 which I've been more than happy with for the past 7 months. I was going to spend more, but the photo quality at 5x7 and A4 wasn't worth the extra money. However, if you are going to be printing black and white I would recommend the R800 or another printer which has more than just a black ink cartridge, the test prints from Epson were much closer to film prints than I got from my IP4000.

I find that the (R1800 the larger version of he 800) is the best photo printer Ive used so far. Excellent color, very good print permanence.

I replaced my Epson 870 with an HP 7960, 9 inks and brilliant, having the print heads in the cartridges gets over the nozzle blocking problems I had with my Epson, running costs are actually cheaper than the Epson, when including cost of wasted ink and paper with duff prints from the Epson

A google search should get you some reviews on the HP7960, which was oringinally around £250, but has now been discontinued; on offer at around £100 to £150 at some branches of PC World, Jessops etc

I did some reading up on the HP 7960 and it does look an interesting option, especially for B&W use. It does seem to be quite slow though, and it's not much cheaper than the likes of the R800.

I've narrowed the options down to the HP 8450, Epson R800 or Canon ip8500 but I'm still leaning towards the Epson at the moment.

I can't say anything about the Canon, but I love the Epson, and I've not had good results with HP. Of course, this wasn't a current HP model, but I know for sure the Epson R1800 is an incredable printer. The 800 is a smaller version of the 1800.
