Why not check out the various manufacturers web sites, ask for brochures to be sent and compare the features to see which camera fulfills your requirements. Also check out reviews at paces like www.ephotozine.co.uk and www.dpreview.com to get other points of view.
The cameras can be handled at your local photo supplier.
The Pentax is a strong contender as you can use your existing lenses. It also is capable of delivering first class results. Otherwise, it is a matter of personal preference.

The user interface on the Pentax digital SLRs is very similar to the Z1 and Z1-P, so you will be on familiar territory.
The Pentax cameras are smaller than the competition, and generally very well-built (though the memory card door is a well-known minor defect).
They have the best viewfinders of all, large and bright.
They work with all Pentax lenses back to 1975 (the first K lenses). Some old Sigma lenses have problems with modern cameras, but I believe they can be re-chipped if necessary.
They take a choice of batteries, including AAs and NiMHs. Very useful if you are somewhere remote. Also, rechargeable NiMHs are much cheaper.
The difference in crop factor (1.5 or 1.6) is too small to make any real difference, though, in general, the smaller the crop the better.
Unless you like to mix photography with weightlifting, there is not a lot of point in changing brands.
Good luck.

ok thx for the relplies
I have done a bit of research since posting last night.
I think sticking with Pentax is the way to go Altho if i were to spend over £1000 on a body i would probably go for the new Canon 20D but I am now very intrigued about the istDS
I read up on the specs and it seems to be practically the same camera as the istD for allot less money.
Ok it is aimed at a more amateur market but its kinda like the Z1 i have now in comparison to the Z1-P
I like the idea of a larger LCD screen, faster flash sync, ammended sharpness, USB 2, higher guide number flash etc but dont like auto program modes which will be of no use to me, not having a PC flash sync is a downer as is lack of .tiff and customisable file sizes but being £400-500 less is a major bonus
I like
nowWhen will it be released for sale???
btw... dpreview is a superb site. totally amazed at the depth of the reviews. thx

I am starting to look into gettign a digital SLR
I have been using a Z1 for a while now and want to upgrade to digital as i simply cant be bothered with scanning and proccessing anymore
I have a Z1, 28-70AF pentax and 70-300 Sigma DL macro A lens (sold my 15mm Pentax SMC-A hope you liek it Kim!)
If i got a istD would these lens' fit?
I am considerign getign a istD with a 18-55 or possibly chaing altogether and getting a EOS 10D or Nikon d100
what would be the major differences and which would you go for and why?
Pentax has a conversion of 1.5 right where as others have 1.6?
how do the sensors compare?
pentax is same as nikon so how do the cameras differ?
I would really appreciate any advice you guys could give
