Whats the difference

I've also heard 'long focus' used in reference to plate cameras but these are actually long focus rather than telephoto.

What's the difference between these?
A long focus 500mm lens will have 500mm back focus but a tele will have a shorter back focus making it more compact.

The long focus lens needs almost 20 inches of barrel just for the light path, let alone the lens elements themselves.

The telephoto has the advantage of being more compact because it has extra elements that serve to shorten the distance between lens and sensor.

I thought your post last night at 19:15 was fine - as you summarised, zooms are variable focal length, telephotos are fixed, and a picture taken with a zoom set to focal length x should look much the same as one taken with a telephoto of focal length x.

There's a lot of extra information in Anvh's post that, with respect, perhaps isn't quite in the simple terms you were looking for! That doesn't at all make you stupid, which you clearly aren't.

i know about the perspective things, if your up close and take a photo everything have a bit more perspective, but if you go backwards then zoom in the photographed object in the previous picture and make it the same size then things look different
Exactly.
Stefan does that, sometimes....

how a watch works.

I know how watches work I really wanted to know because tele's are really expensive, theres no point in buying one if i can get a decently priced zoom that would pretty much do the same thing. I mainly take pictures of landscapes and nature, sometimes the odd random picture that only happens once every 100 years.

My next buy will be a wide angle and maybe a longer zoom.

By the way, has anybody got any pictures of the same thing taken with a telephoto at X focal length and a zoom at x focal length, just like to see what it really looks like,

cheers

Yes sorry about that

What you said earlier is quite true Danny it's just this bit that is not right.

but telephotos are fixed
you have variable focal lengths = zooms
fixed focal lengths = primes

Telephoto only say something about the length of the focal length not more nothing less, so it can be zoom or a prime lens.
The ordering goes from:
ultra-wide, wide-angle, normal, short-telephoto, telephoto, extreme-telephoto.

Hopefully that explains it better

They will look the same but a prime lens is optimized for that range since it is a fix focal length so the image quality will be most likely better.

Hi Danny,

Just have a look here. You can search for pictures from every old and modern lens, Pentax ever made.
Click on image data and select lenses. Enjoy. Really great examples of Pentax photography are found there.

Martin.
Best regards,

Martin.
