Chris,

Many thanks for your input.

You have convinced me to go ahead and order one.

They seem well priced from SRS.

You're most welcome. I'm amazed they're not more common, actually. I suppose there'll be some applications where rotating in the constant plane that you get with conventional heads is important - panoramas maybe - but for general purpose 'frame, then shoot' applications, it's so much more convenient.

I hope the build quality is as good now as it was 15-20 years ago. If it is, I'm sure you'll really like it.

Let us know how you get on with it.

LIke several others here, my vote goes with the MkII Benbo, high, solid construction, versatile like no other in operation, inverted legs (biggest tube on the outside at the base of leg) means water & muck proof up to 3 feet approx, smooth action BS head (I added extra revolving base for extra luxury).

I too am looking for a decent tripod and I went into a Jacobs digital where they had a second hand Manfrotto 190XB (only a week old) for £70 which seemed like a bargain considering the cheapest I can find it is on warehouse express for £85.

I have read many threads and everyone seems to point to the 190XPROB. They did not have that one in the store but on warehouse express the two are the same price so I am not sure what the difference is between them. Has anyone tried both? I am basically wondering whether I should get the 190XB at that price.

Also, i have been looking to possibly get a Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom. A search on the forum does not yield much at all. Has anyone tried them? I would use the gorillapod for many street photography when the ligh is low but a normal tripod for landscape etc.

The PROXB has a centre column that rotates through 90 degrees to horizontal, browse the English photo catalogue from http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/pid/1798/lang/en to see what I mean.

Chris,

I now have my Slik pistol grip. It is a brilliant piece of kit - very intuitive to use.

It is exactly the same as your model, except the yellow bits are now grey. It is still made in Japan

Grey is much better

Hope you enjoy it - I'm sure you will.

I found the Slik grip so good that I bought another one this week, so I have one on my tripod and one on my monopod.
