What is a long exposure?

Hi Caz,
A beautiful shot, very nicely composed, i love the way the water leads into the foreground of the shot, so many details to pick from.
Its very difficult to perform such a shot in daylight conditions, from the exif data i can see your approach to this shot and for this you should be commended.
However generally when attempting to do the same shot, i attach grad. filters, so by artificially dropping stops on the camera, it allows me to generate greater exposure times, of course because of the times involved, this is all done by tripod.
You have captured the movement of the water beautifully, but i feel somehow you may be in-between the two approaches of performing such shots, by being at the higher end of the shutter speed scale, this will allow you to almost freeze time, therfore at the lower end you will simply just slow it all down, which i always feel you get the better effect from, although i am no master.
If you are without filters etc. try nightime work, where the absence of light/ filters will not affect the exposure times.
Hope i have helped to some degree.
Best regards.
Matt

Hi Matt,
I take on board your comments on the grads but I didn't have any to hand at the time & be be honest I wanted to try my hand at a more raw effect. I did use a tripod but given the location it wasn't an easy shot to obtain. My husband did comment on how close to the edge I was, but then sometimes you need to take a little risk to get the right perspective. I'm stil none the wiser about what is considered a long exposure. Perhaps it is subjective. Mmmmm.... Shall I pull my entry or leave it in?
Thank you for your kind remarks. My dad was a professional photoghapher & always very critical of my efforst so it's nice to hear someone give positive feedback other than my husband.
