What happens when you get to 10,000?

Hi everyone,

Just a thought. What happens to the image numbering on the istD when you get past IMGP9999, do you go back to IMGP0001 or does it get itself another digit, and give you IMGP10000?

Might be a bit of a pain when you start getting duplicates...

I've only got another 1,500 to go, so if someone could let me know by tomorrow, that would be handy

I'm fascinated to find out the answer, but I have a few more shots to go before my camera gets to these figures. Just short of 2000 shots at the moment!

I think on most cameras it resets, and starts a different directory name. I know if it finds a duplicate file on the card, it just creates another folder for the photos and carries on with the new folder.

If you are really really lucky a man from Pentax may teleport himself to your side and present you with a brand-spanking new camera. Or is that just a dream I have?

I find that using multiple cameras, file numbers can be a problem.
I use a program that extracts the exif data (date and time to be precise) and renames all the images with: {name/day/month/year/time} eg: don01042006t1245.jpg before loading them to Iphoto. That way images from different cameras and diferent cards all get sorted into proper order as they're loaded.....as long as yer camera clocks are synced that is.

It just goes back to zero and starts again.

It's almost as though they don't expect anyone to get to 10,000. Okay, what's supposed to happen before then:

a) You 'upgrade' to a DS or DL
b) It's a throwaway society; the camera packs up, you get another one
c) You suddenly realise Peter Elgar's right all along, bin the D and get your MZ5N back out, rummaging around in the back of the fridge for the Velvia that's still lurking there


Answers on a postcard please, first one out of the hat gets a roll of Velvia that's been lurking in the fridge.

Or you use Adobe's DNG converter to convert all the files to a naming system that makes sense to you. You can use the date and time of creation, as stated, or any other system that suits your fancy.

I allways liked the numbering which my old minolta camera used. Every day get's a new directory with the date in the name. This way you never get duplicates in the same folder.
I use the same strategy with my DS. I create a directory name on the PC with the date on which the pictures were taken. I use 1 digit for the year, two for the month and two for the day.
So the folder name for the pictures taken today would be: 60405

Capture One includes a downloader tool that I use and store each download in a dated and named directory. Each year gets its own directory.
e.g. today might be:
... Pentax istD20062006-04-05 Lens tests

They have to stay in separate directories like that, otherwise there are far too many images. In addition it allows me to use BeyondCompare to quickly synchronise directories between my machine and a RAID server

My problem is that I supply images to customers, so the easiest way I have of sorting them once downloaded is into subjects - ...invertebra/butterflies/gatekeeper/... for instance.

This leaves a fair possibility that I might end up with duplicates, although unlikely, I have to admit. If it arises, I'll just have to amend the image number.

You can always use Adobe Bridge to batch rename files. I use my initials, then the date (YYYYMMDD), then a dash or underscore, then the time (HHMMSS).

At lest I always know when a photo was taken!

I use Extensis Portfolio.

Shoot RAW, copy images to an Image-only partition, make new folder something like:-

Multimediapicsplace-dateimg001 etc

Then once all are copied over I ADD to Portfolio, which then grabs all the EXIF etc plus the path and file name.

From then onward I can search using CONTAINS on the Path.

I also add a description for each photo, and of course that can be searched on as well.

Before I had a great folder system, but no way to quickly locate pictures and make up web pages and so on, now I have something that works well. I throughly recommend Portfolio.

Irfanview has a very quick and easy batch rename facility, and it can append additional characters to the existing file name if you wish.

And it's free, and perhaps the best image viewer you can get.
