Went to The Public today (the new art gallery). More shots of that to come, but I was most pleased with some pictures I took of an old fence...

Do these work? Which composition do you prefer?

The first one for me.
The shot contains more variation and the composition is better and the orange chimney is true element in the photo where as with the other photo it's not something catching your eye as important.

Now dont get in an up roar but what is the photo of. The orange thing, the sky and clouds, the shadow, or even a plywood wall. All good elements just nothing to guide the eye to one of them.
Just my opinion.

No that's a good comment! I was a bit ambivalent about the chimney, but couldn't get low enough to exclude it from the shot. So I thought I'd try and include it and possibly link it to the tree trunk shadow to create an awkward juxtaposition.

What really drew me was the shadow, and the way the fence divided the frame with shadow below and clouds above.

I'd crop the whole sky and chimney out and focus attention on the play of light, shadow and texture on the fence.

The colours and swirls in the pink shot are wonderful: a great abstract.

I think the chimney should stay in line with the tree trunk. Agree about the darkened sky and I think you should put the verticals in the fence straight.

Steven, I do see a story here: The wood of the fence as well as the wood of the tree might go through the chimney one day and end up in the sky

Joking aside, I think it works well and I for one do like the composition. Yes, it would have been slightly better to turn a little more to the right, but I think it doesn't need the thirds here. In the vertical the sky could loose a bit.

So I would stick with the composition (apart from the sky) and go for i-berg's other PP.

Yes - the fence on its own makes a lot of sense as well - that's a whole story in itself. Well seen!

On the whole, no, in my opinion!

There was an interesting interactive drawing exhibit, and a fascinating short film. The rest was fluff. Lots of interactive / community participation art, which is nice but doesn't really stimulate the parts of your brain that good art can, nothing to stop you in your tracks. Great space though, and still worth a visit. I would like to try Walsall Art Gallery now as the art work there is supposed to be more serious and the building is gorgeous.

Ah well, enjoy the building anyway. Maybe you can exhibit your photos there one day .
