It goes to show, though, how unpredictable judges can be. Who would have put any money on a 1-2-3 for colour this round :

Not exactly HDR. It's one layer that had 'local equalization' applied in Corel PhotoPaint (still haven't found a Photoshop plug in to do that) and 'soft light' layer mode. Then there is another 'soft light' layer that had Gaussian blur applied.PREINI: Like it! I think this may be a bit of HDR decay? A bit of dodging and burning and that's it. (Apart from the conversion to B&W, but that was done earlier).

It's a shame that I will have to pause for 4 or 5 rounds as I'm going out to sea again.

Thank you Lilly for such detailed comments. I agree with the angle of the shot being wrong, I did want to move around a bit but didn't want to get into a fight with a load of nettles!
Well done to the winner, a well deserved win too (and congrats to my other half for getting Second place!)

"Correct me if I am wrong but did you use flash and if so why?"
The pub was boarded up with the services disconnected, so it was very dark.
The only way my 'work' p & s camera would take the photograph was with flash.
I am not happy about using my K10d etc. around grotty building sites

The barn was pitch black with the only source of light from a few missing timber boards. The only accessible door had to be forced open by about a foot to gain access and then it sprang back closed, so it really was very, very dark.

BELINDA: Flash again used? To me is spoils the atmosphere of potentially a great subject. The eye is drawn downwards to the over bright area. With a tripod and careful exposure it would look more gritty, decayed & neglected.
