Weekly competition #117 - Street photography - Comments

P.S. What's the deal with all the non-pentax equipment entries?

There are few rules in the weekly competitions but one is that entries should be taken on Pentax cameras or Samsung DSLRs. In my case the EXIF rarely gives accurate details of my equipment so I'll make it clear all my pix are taken on a K10 or ist DS. My only non-Pentax lens is a Sigma 10-20mm zoom.
I'd like to congratulate Pentaxian on choosing street photography for this week's subject. Its something many members on PU relate to.

This isn't what I know as street photography. It's a photograph taken in a street. I'm not denigrating the topic I'm just saying it's not street photography as is usually accepted.

OK I'll bite...

The definition of:

...is pretty much word-for-word what I would describe as "street photography", so I'm intrigued to know what definition you guys would give to the genre. What am I missing here?

I always understood street photography to be shots of primarily people in the street usually taken in a candid manner. Otherwise a glamour shoot in a street becomes street photography as does an architectural shot of St Paul's. While I am no stickler for classifying everything in sight there was no need to call it street photography when in fact what was meant was a photograph in a street.

Bear in it has been established that I got out of bed the wrong side today.

Being a little more reasonable I have done a very quick scan (I should be working) and most people don't seem to subscribe to my definition but I fear that's maybe because I'm old fashioned (and right).

The important thing for the competition is what the Judge has defined as Street Photography, and he's been quite clear about it.

Don't get confused by other definitions - that's not the way to win!

I'm a bit surprised that noone has noticed this before now - though perhaps I've missed a post over the w/e - but the competition appears to have been judged on Saturday afternoon. According to comments under David Trout's entry posted at 1437 on the 3rd Oct. Pentaxian67 chose this as the winner. There are likewise comments under Organicimagery's and flat4's entries indicating these are 2nd & 3rd.

Not sure where this leaves the comp - as many entries were posted after this.

Going on this week's and last week's experience, can I make a request of the convenors. That once a competition winner is chosen a message is sent to the winner indicating what the judging entails - including not only when the competition is closed and should be judged, but also that feedback on all the images is expected from the judge.
Or maybe something to this effect could be included in the spiel on the comps page - then we might get entries only from people who are prepared to fully participate in the comp by posting considered feedback in the event that they have to act as judge. A quite reasonable qualification for participation, IMHO.

I've sent a PM to the judge although I'm not sure what can really be done now.

Well I am so pleased I went out took a photograph for this competition on Saturday apparently after the judging was completed.

I think Dr Mhuni's comments are spot on.

I have to wonder if it's worth entering the competition any more.

I PM'd the judge as soon as I noticed the premature 'result' on Saturday and he replied saying he thought the competition ended on Saturday. I also drew it to the attention of John Riley. I don't know what is happening now.
I agree with Dr Mhuni that the rules of judging should be made quite clear at the outset of a competition, for the benefit of first timers.
I'm hoping that now Pentaxian will be able to re judge the entries as several people entered after the so called result was announced. It's okay by me if he comes up with a different result.
