Weather beat me again - another excuse to try HDR

Went out to Llangollen this afternoon to try a new location, more of a factfinding trip than anything but was hoping I might see a bit of sunshine, not to be sadly. I still shot a few photos just to figure out the composition I preferred.

This is HDR as the lighting wasn't great

It was also a good excuse to try a few of the K5 features too:

incamera HDR - won't be using it again as Photomatix is much more powerful.

Live View - great tool for checking composition with the camera on a tripod.

Multi exposure - couldn't get it to work, need to read the manual!!

I don't know precisely what it is but the photo looks a bit grey in the lighter parts... maybe you over did it?

Multi exposure only works with JPG, for RAW you need bracketing, maybe that is the problem?

A typically gorgeous Welsh landscape, and nothing wrong with the composition.

My personal preference would be to eschew the HDR (which I can't abide) and either to go back on a better day, or to try to make something of the dark clouds and try for a more moody sort of shot.

I'm with you on this option George, I'm not keen on spending loads of time processing, my processing skills aren't the best either so I'm waiting for a nice evening and off to shoot the scene again

I agree with George, potential for a great shot there, the HDR doesn't do it for me on this one, I think the key with this is to keep it natural and to have impact.

If you shoot wider would be better IMO.

Thanks for the suggestion but it's not really an option - there's a really ugly caravan site immediately to the left of the abbey and the town of Llangollen further to the right which would add lots of distracting buildings into the R/H side of the frame if I shot any wider.

IC, well try again tomorrow, you might have better luck with the weather.

Simon you've picked up HDR a lot faster than I have - I use the in-camera HDR as I get a bit lost processing my own and tend to end up with slightly acidic/pastel colours. I have to tweak the cameras default output though. But as G says, it would be nicer in good light, HDR or not.

Not keen on HDR at all. There is no depth to that pic, which is the fault of the DHR mroe than anything.

I think the lack of depth is more due to the flat lighting that as a result of HDR, it was solid cloud cover so no sunlight/shadows. My next effort will be a bit more succesful with a bit of luck

Isn't it frustrating when you can see exactly what you want in your image - your shot is proof of that - so near and yet...

Was that taken from the road coming down from the Horseshoe?

Yes it certainly is, you get used it though when you live in the UK and you're daft enough to get interested in landscape photography - my unsuccessful days outnumber my successful ones by about 10:1 due to weather!! Still it's a good excuse to spend even more time in the wonderful countryside.
