I need some help. My daughter wishes to buy her boyfriend a DSLR but she's broke so the budget is about £250 for body and kit lens. Used is fine old is not so fine.

For that money you are hard pressed to get a Pentax - true?

Anyway he has no brand loyalty and I couldn't care less what he gets as if we're honest neither have I got any loyalty, just an economic one!

Which shops are good to look at for used cameras please? We've tried LCE and one or two independents.

SRS, eBay....you should find something within budget.

Camera fairs are another likely source - I don't know which is closest to you but there's a big one regularly at Wolverhampton (not a million miles from Worcestershire).

SRS has a DS for 199.00. (Edit- sorry missed your comment about older bodies). Also try a search of London camera exchange. Saw a K10 in their Bristol branch for 245.00

Thanks guys.

Fairs: She won't do them and I am strapped for weekend time.

eBay: I have looked for an Oly E510 for example and it's quite limited.

SRS: I checked them out as they have the benefit of honesty but nothing there really in budget.

DS is a bit long in the tooth for her purposes I think. We have rejected a Canon of a similar vintage.

A K100 would do I guess. It's what I started with and was very goo and he could have my kit lens that is not getting used.

The *istDS is actually a very capable DSLR and has the added advantage of having a Pentaprism viewfinder.

It has TTL flash control too.

She'll reject it on the grounds of age I'm afraid. Logic need to be applicable.

Then don't tell her how old it is.

The DS is only "old" by crazy digital standards. It's not old by camera standards. Tell her that!

Or get this http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/SHdetails.asp?Item=17784 + DA L 18-55 for £25 from SRS.

One suspects you two are not fathers of daughters!

Logic need to be applicable!

That LCE K10D looks better as I can chuck in the kit lens - I like the boyfriend as well. He's very good to her and they make a lovely couple.

How right you are Mike, both my daughters are on the ball when it comes to working out what's what (latest and greatest kit)

You mentioned a E-510 earlier, I had one before my K20D, it's a fine little D-SLR with really excellent kit lenses, capable of great images. You wouldn't go far wrong with one, I really enjoyed mine

Thanks GreyTop - there is one local to her but without the kit lens. I think I favour the Oly at the moment. But there is a K100D at £103 on eBay at the moment which is well under budget and a better gamble money wise.

I know that this is smutty talk but is the Sony A230L OK? I like Sony gear and I respected Minolta. But that's ancient history.

I can get one new with kit lens £309 - seems like a good deal to me.

Thanks again guys

I've tried the lower range Sonys on the hand, and they were horrible.

A K100D, K200D and even a well used K10D should be had for that amount. Also theres is a 18-55mm L on SRS for £25.
