Wanted: Sigma 70-200mm

Hi all,

Am looking for one of these:

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM II Lens

At a reasonable and sensible price. SRS are doing them at £659..... so if you have one that yuo no longer love nor use, let me know............

I think £659 is a reasonable price...

So do I. I am not questioning the reasonableness of the price of a new one, but before I went and bought new, I thought I might see if a fellow pentax user had one that they seldom used and were considering selling?????

That way if a mutually acceptable price was agreed, they would get a wadge of £, and I would get the lens I am looking for..........

Hence the first part of the thread saying "Wanted", not "I think this lens is expensive"


Looks like you have far too many lenses (going by your sig!) - Want to part with the 70-200 ???

If you are not worried about HSM then have a look at the Tamron 70-200mm .. it is apparently sharper than the Sigma macro varieties. IMO the only Sigma 70-200mm lenses worth having are the non macro variety as they put an extra element in to get closer focusing but at the expense of sharpness at the long end.

Considering the prices Sigma lenses have been just recently, and the fact that the lens you are after is the most recent incarnation I think the SRS price is good, and because the 70-200 EX has a good rep in all its incarnations, not many are likely to come on sale.

Good luck anyway - the 70-200 is a good match for a DSLR.

Though IIRC the HSM version of the Sigma has quick shift focus while the Tamron and pre-HSM Sigmas do not.

You maybe correct about the quickshift .. I am not sure.
It's a nice feature but not something I use on my Pentax lenses anyway but I suppose it may be useful to some.

I find it very useful for wildlife when the focus is lost in dense foliage with small subjects, also when using Teleconverters with a tendency to hunt in AF. I've nearly always got my left hand supporting the lens under the focus ring on large Tele's 300mm+. It took a little getting used to but now has become second nature, I wouldn't want to be without it now.

I use the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM II Lens mainly for taking rugby and motorsport and have no problem with sharpness. Stopped down to F5.6 it's nearly on par with my DA* 300mm.

Before I purchased my non HSM non macro version I tried 2 copies of the newer model .. wide open at f2.8/200mm the older lens wiped the floor with it. Have since seen this reported on the other Pentax forum a few times now.

Me too - which is why i went for someone's non-macro version


Although I recently read something that said the new Sigma 70-200 HSM (OS version) has dropped the macro facility so hopefully it is back up to the standard of the old non-macro.
