Wanted: SFX(n) AA Battery holder

Hi All,

Bit of a long shot this, but I'm looking for an SFX(n) AA Battery holder - had one in the past but sold it with my SFXn a long time ago

I found that myself, and again I'm not sure it's the AA holder either. I was trying to buy it online but the priced seemed to jump once I'd got it into my basket. I'll give them a call next week.

There was a sfxn that sold on ebay earlier this year, the picture looked like it had the large grip.

I was looking for one late last year but in the end just bought a battery! Got the camera running, still haven't used it- been to busy getting back into using a dslr!

I used to have an SFXn in the early '90s, my thoughts at the time were that it was built like a brick privy. It was my 'party' camera and it came through everything I could throw at it.

I've recently acquired an SFX (primarily because it came with a 35-70 F zoom), dug out an old 2CR5 and it fired straight up. Back in the '90s a 2CR5 was £15 minimum - far cry from today. I regret selling my old SFXn & AA battery grip, probably for a pittance!

I'm still amazed that a modern lens will completely work with a 25 yr old AF camera and that a 25yr old AF lens will work with a modern camera (OK I know we're Pentax shooters and compatibility is a boring subject, but come on - it's impressive).

It's hard to believe though that the SFXn was Pentax's most advanced camera before the Z-1 appeared - even when I didn't have any AF lenses, it was by far the best Pentax I'd owned.

I still have my SFXn from the 90's. it was in regular use until I bought a *ist DL in 2005. My interest wained a bit in photography, got back in the swing of things in the last 12 months. I acquired a *ist D and relearnt using camera controls etc. then got hold of a K5 from a forum member. I also dug out my old smc F 35-70 ( kit lens). - well in my opinion it's much better than the current kit lenses. I,ve been trying to get hold of one of the same era 50mm's. and last week I managed to get hold of a nice SMC -F 50mm f1.4. It was attached to a SFXn and came with a Pentax flash along with a Sigma compact zoom- all for £120 - a bargain even considering that SFXn has a damaged shutter. I'm going to test it out this week and if it is broken, I'll use the camera for spares.

The 35-70 wasn't a 'kit lens', that term hadn't been invented then. It was simply one of several zoom lenses available from Pentax (discounted very slightly if bought with a body). If you couldn't afford the camera & 35-70, you could buy it with the 50mm f/1.4 or for a bit less the 50mm f/1.7. If either was too much, you could buy the body only and use your existing K lenses (no crippled mount and AF 'in focus' indicator and arrows to tell you which way to turn the focus ring). Primes were cheap then and zooms expensive...

I'm really embarrassed to state how little I paid for my F 50 f/1.7 in '91

As an aside, the P30T (Titanium) was launched to match the colour scheme (Titanium) of the 'F' lenses.

You are corect about the lens choice - I bought the SMC-F 35-70mm and the SMC-F 70-210mm with the body, and used both a lot with the SFXn. When I changed to digital I bough a *ist DL with the 18-55mm "kit lens". I used this along with the 70-210mm. About 18 months ago the 70-210mm developed a stiff zoom - this and the fact is was heavy promted me to but a DA 55-300mm.
Recently I started using the 35-70mm and got some really nice results - so this has sparked an interest in the older lenses for me. I have just got hold of a SMC-F 35-105mm, this is quite well rated on the other forum.

I just need to get out more now and take some images - work gets in the way!!!

The term "kit lens" has almost become synonymous with "low cost" but one very famous kit lens, the 43mm f/1.9 Limited, was far from low cost. That came originally only with the MZ-3, as a kit.

I agree - When I bought the SFXn back in 1989 the SMC-F 35-70mm was one of the recommended lenses. With my renewed interest in photography I have found that I am using these 20+ year old lenses more than the new ones.

Getting a little off topic here with the search for the SFXn AA battery holder - I'd be interested if you do find a source as I would quite like to get hold of one as well.

Just compared the SFX & SFXn 2CR5 battery holders, quite surprisingly they're different. The SFX one has a more pronounced curve (and slight overlap with the inside of the camera grip) to the SFXn one. The SFX one has 'SFX' on the holder, the SFXn holder is plain with 'SFX' on the inside of the camera grip.

This is why the SFX holder looks closer to the AA battery holder (that had no logo and was noticeably 'squarer' as I remember it). The one in MrCad is almost certainly the SFX 2CR5 holder from what I've just seen.
