Want to learn Lightroom 3 and/or CS5

I find the books by Martin Evening to be very well written and well laid out.
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers
Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers: A professional image editor's guide to the creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC
A Google search will through up lots of free online tutorials and there is some useful information available on the Adobe site.
For learning more unusual techniques, I often buy 'out of date mags' complete with CS5/LR3 tutorials for a £1 from our local market.

If you scroll down a bit there are some really excellent video tutorials for LR3 that have helped me a lot. I'd start with LR3 and work your way across to CS5 - I find i use LR3 95% of the time these days without having to jump up to CS5.

The DA* profiles should be downloaded/installed when you update to LR3.3

The DA fisheye 10-17 profile is great. I don't always use it as mostly I want the distortion of the fish eye, but the profile can be used very creatively

Smeggy's link in the post above yours has user created profiles. There is a 16-45 profile amongst them
Adobe have a lens profile creator program available for free download from their website. There is also a useful user guide available, which walks you through the process. Relatively easy for a fixed focal length lens, provided you have a good tripod and access to an A3 printer to print out the test charts. You can create your own Gareth. Don't ask me how though

do you specifically need A3? I thought you could use A4 sheets and reposition the sheet on the wall and take multiple shots?Blythman wrote:

Gareth - silly question maybe - were you working with a .dng or a .jpg file?
Pentax lens profiles not available with .jpg images. In fact, IIRC, lens corrections only supposed to work with RAW files.

Ah, it was a Jpeg file, when I edited a .DNG file it gave me Pentax as an option and worked like it should
So why can Pentax only be used in RAW as the other camera brands still list in Jpeg form so presumably lens correction can be used for either RAW or Jpeg for them :
Profiles can be created for RAW or JPG files and maybe for a Combination of both. If you search the 'net' you will find that there are some user created filed that work specifically on JPGs. Ah, it was a Jpeg file, when I edited a .DNG file it gave me Pentax as an option and worked like it should

The Pentax profiles that became available after the last update are RAW specific. I am guessing that with limited resources Pentax engineers focused their efforts on RAW, as they know the RAW shooters post process, whereas not all all JPG shooters do.
I have never used a profile designed for another brand , but I do wonder if there is a compromise in effectiveness, when using a Combination (RAW +JPG) profile?

I have Lightroom 3 and CS5 but haven't played with them yet, still using Picasa 3 (good for basics- cropping, editing colours basically and organising photos).
I'm ready to make the leap and learn Lightroom 3 and/or CS5.
I'm happy to play around with them but am looking for a guide/book/online tutorials.
Can anyone recommend one that'll go through the features etc. I don't mind if it's a physical book or online course/tutorials/site. Something that's easy to follow would be ideal.
A few people have said that Lightroom 3 is good for basic editing and that CS5 is a hell of a lot more complex. So I'm not sure should I start with Lightroom 3 and leave CS5 or 'learn' both'. Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Pa.
