Love the vista in the first photograph, but especially the big sky.

What you need are lenses, more lenses, bigger lenses, better lenses, faster lenses, vintage lenses and when you have these, your pictures will be perfect!

Totally agree - you could almost crop off the bottom quarter and let the big sky dominate even more!

That is a wonderful sky. I agree with cropping the bottom (but perhaps not quite so drastically) and maybe making the format wider, which would do the crop while preserving the sky.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Thank you chaps for the good comments and suggestions. I have had a bit more time and used Gimp to do the 'stretching' , here is the result;
