Maybe Oggy can enlighten me. I was at Belvoir Castle on Saturday - without camera and suddenly at under 1000 feet the Vulcan flew over. I can only guess it was taking off from the 'home ' airfield in Leicestershire to fly up to Sunderland, Windemere and East Fortune. I was certainly very impressive.

In literature going back hundreds of years, ships were "she" and it seems to have carried over to aircraft.

That would probably date back to before the RAF came into existence, and military aircraft were operated by the Fleet Air Arm (or the Army Air Corps).

The unholy crossover between nautical and aeronautical continues. The aircraft one is flying may be referred to as the ownship, and it may be part of a four ship formation
