Vivid / bright

I've seen a number of posters mention that they set their jpegs to bright (vivid?) in their k-x cameras. There doesn't seem to be that option on the k-r. Instead it has some scary settings screen where you adjust a number of parameters that effect the image. Are there any recommended settings such as make this one +1, this one -2 etc?

Only relevant if you shoot JPEG, which I do, and I use a setting of +1 sharpness. Everything else remains at zero and the overall setting is Natural. I find Vivid to be rather OTT.

Yeah I've seen one say they mostly use a modified Vibrant, over the default Bright (Vivid is a Canon cameras option IIRC). But to me anyway, one or a few opinionated preferences doth not make convincing statistical evidence to unbalance the whole dataset.

And as it's invariably a subjective matter, I suppose we can be grateful that Pentax has put all those pre-named but still user-customisable pic style options in their humble K-x (and presumably K-r).
And made them fairly quick~easy accessible too via the INFO button route.

To be frank [*] I suggest just go for it. Do your own shoot testing for each of the 7 pre-named, c/w minor tweak-adjusting on each of the 5 parameters -- and be as extensive as you need to, until satisfied that each one falls 'just right' to your judgment.

It looks like you get an extra 2 over the 7 in K-x (Bleach Bypass and Reversal Film), making 9 total, juicy customisable presets to play with.

Or about 126 combos by my rough calcs, so lots of fun ahead to be had making adjustment tests and comparisons there.

Some good news. Hoya Corp has released a proper electronic Manual for K-r now, so you don't have to fumble through ye olde skool paper rubbish anymore to find things. (355 pages, En)
