Viewing Live View on Laptop

Previously I have connected my K-5 to my television via a HDMI cable and viewed the Live View image on the television. Can I do the same thing with a laptop?

At our next photography club meeting I am doing a small talk on exposure modes. So everyone can see more clearly I would like my Live View image to be viewed on a laptop screen. I tried it at home last night with no luck.

Is it because the HDMI port on the laptop is output only and will not accept an input?

Or is there another way?

Yes to this part. Hdmi on laptop is output only.

Wifi sd card?

Do you want a real time image or just to display the final image files?

You need a video capture device for a PC/Laptop...

Thanks
I want a real time image as you would have in capture mode. I want to show the camera settings for different modes, aperture & shutter priority. As I alter one setting I want to show how the camera adjusts the other, plus how to use the exposure meter in manual mode. Displaying on a laptop will be easier than everyone gathered around my camera.

If all else fails I can always take a small monitor with me I suppose but the laptop would be better.

Does your club have a projector with HDMI input?

Yes it does. Unfortunately my demonstration will not be for the whole club at once, just for half a dozen people gathered around a table. Otherwise projecting it would be perfect.

Take a look at this. http://www.ebuyer.com/671954-usb-3-0-video-capture-device-hdmi-dvi-vga-usb3hdcap...

It supports streaming, but you'll need to confirm with StarTech that it will take the real-time HDMI output from the camera and allow it to be viewed on a laptop screen via a USB3 port.

They also do one for USB2, but again you'll need to check with StarTech. http://www.ebuyer.com/604014-startech-usb-2-0-hd-pvr-gaming-and-video-capture-de...

The USB2 version is sub-£100 (by 1p) at dabs.com:

Why not use the projector at close quarters? All you need is a screen behind you and they generally focus very closely with a small image. Alternatively, forget the laptop and use a monitor or TV directly. That will give you the output from the camera, live and very clear.
Best regards, John

$130 is too much?? I'd say that's very reasonable for such a useful device.

For a one hour talk I think it's a bit overkill for me.
I think I'll use a computer monitor instead.
As John says it works and is very clear.

Exactly. The HDMI output is worth using for what you're trying to do. From memory the hdmi output has the screen overlay information so would be ideal for your purposes.

You can use a projector for small use, in fact they generally get better the closer you are to the wall anyway. Stay further back than the minimum focus distance and you'll be fine. I'd go that way for cheap, or use a small TV with hdmi input. Don't over complicate the issue.

As an aside, getting a high quality clean output (no overlay messages/focus aids etc) is desirable for video users who then use an external encoder to save the video at a much better quality level than the camera itself does. Pentax doesn't offer a clean hdmi output that I am aware of, and this is one of the things being asked for, to open up the opportunity to use an external recorder.
