Vienna

Hi everyone. Last week we were lucky enough to take a trip to Vienna for a few days. We had a great time, visiting the Christmas Markets, Schonbrunn Palace and the Spanish Riding School. Vienna really is a beautiful city and these pics really don't do it justice (though I had 'sampled' the glühwein several times!)

My first trip since having my K10D so my pictures still have that 'holiday snap' look to them so would really appreciate any comments or tips on how to improve (not that I'm going back to Vienna any time soon ).

First of all the Rathaus (City Hall)

Some nice photos there. One suggestion: if you learn to use the histogram feature on the K10 (either when you take the shot, or when you review it) you can avoid having burnt out highlights. This will often mean the shot looks very dark, but it still has data that can be retrieved in software afterwards. Having said that, the dynamic range (i.e. the range of values from darkest to brightest) in the fourth shot is probably too great and using some form of HDR technique might be needed.

I also find that unless done for deliberate effect, wonky horizons and converging verticals can ruin a really good shot.

Having said all that, you have some nice shots there and a good eye. Have fun taking photos with the K10!

Number 3 would make a great Christmas card!
Although the sun is distracting I quite like the silhouette effect in number 4. Maybe you can crop it so the sun is less intrusive?

Thanks for your comments everyone . Sometimes I find that although I know the picture doesn't look quite right I'm not sure on how to improve it!

womble - I do usually use the histogram - I think my biggest problem when I go somewhere new is that I get a bit 'snap-happy' and spend more time clicking away rather than carefully reviewing what I've taken - just the child in me I suppose!

I do have some similar pic's of the buildings with a straight perspective and couldn't decide which I preferred though I thought they looked a little flat.

Gwyn - I will have a play cropping number 4 - thanks for the suggestion
