I have been seeing more of these in magazines lately, do they do it because it actually changes the rules governing advertisments? or are they just sponsored articles?

I think it is to do with it being a sponsored article. There were several sponsored by Olympus a few months back.

They are adverts masquerading as articles that the advertiser doesn't have to write themselves but expects a very favourable story.
I had to write a few some years ago and they're nauseating.

But it shows that Pentax are now putting some effort into marketing and playing the same games as Kanikon, so hopefully the pay-off will be that editors and reviewers come to see Pentax as worthy of the same consideration as other brands.

Just received Popular Photography mag here, the whole back cover was a Pentax ad. I was rather surprised to see that.

An advertorial is a cross between an editorial piece and an advert. It's paid for by the sponsor, in this example Pentax, and written by the magazine team who runs it. It should have an editorial slant but cover the points the sponsor wants to get across. In the example referred to. Duncan and Matt came up with the idea of taking the camera to a motor sports event and then went out and did "what it says on the tin". It's all genuine hands-on stuff.

So, what were the chances of any shortcomings in design or manufacture coming thru' for the reader to consider then?
Are'nt magazine editors enough in the pockets of manufacturers already then?
Why did this have to be an "advertorial feature"?.......is the K10 not good enough to stand up on it's own reputation?
If they have to PAY a magazine to give it a good write up then it MUST be a pretty crappy camera.........

Oh, obviously. Yup. Blinding logic If they have to PAY a magazine to give it a good write up then it MUST be a pretty crappy camera.........
That's why I use it and love it
Matt
(Personally I don't like "advertorials". Some might... presumably that's why they do them.)

And that is also why Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Sony... All have this done for every camera they release.
It is a dirty world and you have to play dirty to get anywhere.

I'm not big on advertorials....degrading to legitimate writing. (editorial prostitution (miracle fat loss & male enhancement/baldness cures etc) confuses and misleads many, shall we say "gullable" readers.
now product placement....there's an idea! look at subways tie in to Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore! or the product placement masters: Apple!!!
I'd love to see an episode of CSI Miami, where Cane stops playing with his sunglasses long enough to whip out his trusty Pentax to snap a case breaking photo.

Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
