Using Pentax Camera Utility 4 with JPG-files

Hi

I'm little bit confused with Pentax Camera Utility software. I've tried to edit JPG-image with Pentax camera utility, but nothing works. So, is it possible to adjust jpg-image at all?

Hi Jukka - welcome to Pentax User Forum.

Yes it is possible to edit a JPG, but the Pentax software is for editing .RAW files to create JPGs.

If you want to edit JPGs, you could try Picassa or Gimp (free - Google the name) or Adobe Photoshop elements (cheapish) or the full Photoshop (expensive).

These are just a few of the possibilities.

Am I being daft but I don't think there is any problem editing jpegs using the Pentax digital camera utility. I'm using V4.21 and it seems to work fine on recent images from my K-7 and older images from a *istDS and a K20D.

I usually only shoot jpegs although always on the super 4 star quality setting and normally use Photoshop Elements for my photo editing but the Pentax software has the bonus of allowing you to adjust the white balance.

While I tend to only use the Pentax software for white balance adjustment I have just had a quick play and it looks like most of the other tools that come up with the laboratory tab work fine as well on jpegs with perhaps the exception of "map" because I can't work out what that is supposed to do. On some of them you have to make sure you have ticked the 'apply' box.

Tools under Custom Image, Exposure/Tone, White Balance, Noise Reduction, Lens aberration correction and Rotate/Shift all seem to make changes to a jpeg image with the exception of "Random noise reduction" which is greyed out.

All these tools appear to be mainly adjusting the camera settings so I would still want another decent photo editor for general image manipulation.

YES, Pentax Digital Camera Utility (later PDCU) seems to work. I opened one jpg photo which I just took with K-x and I can edit that jpg photo. I had previously tried to edit jpg photo which I'have first edeted with an other editor than PDCU. Thanks to ewerybody.

I have also GIMP on my laptop (with Windows 7) and also older Photoshop Elements 3. Gimp works fine, but Photoshop dosen't. It seem's that Photoshop and Windows 7 dosen't like to work together and display driver dosen't update the screen correctly ewery time. Adobe has not promised any compatibility with Windows 7, unfortunately.

PSE3 is too old to work with Windows 7. PSE 9 is out now - why not upgrade to that and make use of all the advances which have been made. PSE9 will work with Windows 7. PSE 6, 7 and 8 do for that matter, if you can get a cheap copy.
