Unwanted Adverts

I have just logged on and what am i confronted with Are You Single
Do we really want these kind of adverts on this web site.
Surely photography is the true issue here.

They can be at lot worse than that and I dont want to see them either. They come, I think, via Google and seem to look for keywords on the forum pages. A lot of members use ad blocking software.

However things can be a lot worse, just the other night at 2100, my daughter having just left the room, Channel 4 ran a trail for its sex education series which contained close-ups of two erect penises, a couple having full penetrative sex and a man masturbating. A pretty cynical use of the nine o'clock watershed!

I think some of them result from cookies installed when browsing other sites. I got a really annoying moving ad here from Wickes for showers after I had looked at shower heads on their site. Clearing cookies got rid of it. I've also now blocked third-party cookies which I hope might do some good.

It would not be so bad if the intuitive bit actually worked but it doesn't, once looked on Google for a site that sold ladies underwear, I knew it existed but did not know the name. Google helped me find it ok but the obscene stuff I received for a while after embarrassed even me and that takes some doing.

Bet this site will now carry adverts for all sorts or unmentionable equipment sorry

I never see any adverts apart from the one's in the top banner. Possibly because I use Windows 98SE for browsing and Firefox v2 (not as good as it used to be though). I also have Noscript and Adblock installed plus a massive Hosts file, which you can't have on XP (think it's restricted to 64kb).

This is about the only site I use Firefox for. It clobbers the adverts with it's ABP. I did find an add on for IE7 called IE7Pro, which did stop the adverts, but is very intrusive, hijacking my homepage. The only way I could get rid of it was to restore my C drive from an image. I would not recommend it.

Looking at the ads I can see now, they are all photography related, mostly Pentax.

If you have particular concerns, then do please make a Report.

The ads I can see are all camera related too. What other sites have you been visiting lately?

Just checked with IE7 and mine are mostly Pentax or things pretending to be Pentax. One is something called update detective, which sets my personal spyware alarm off. I do get the occasional 'are you single' and one from Dell computers. I also get really irritating ones once in a while which make stupid noises.

Some modem routers have a facility to block some urls, and if you apply this to pagead and tradedoubler most of the adverts will disappear.

Completely off topic, I have just noticed that Firefox's spell checker is fine with "IE7" but rejects "Firefox".

I don't ever see ads, I use Firefox and Kaspersky Internet Security's Ad blocker. I like the less busy feel of web pages

I had a similar problem a while back, the thread is here, it seems google decide which ads you need to see.

Not had a problem since that time.

As soon as i click on Forum it's there on the right hand side under my username.

Basically Google Ads pick up on the words used on this website, so obvioulsy Pentax is used alot and so is photography. The ads are related to the content. I guess the reason you sometimes get the odd obscene one is because of the section in the gallery "Nude and Glamour".

The reason the ads are on here is because everytime an ad is clicked, the website creator gets money from Google. It's not a great deal for the odd advert but it does add up. Some people make hundreds of thousands of pounds out of it.

As some people have suggested, you can download Ad Blockers to your Internet Explorer. Personally I use Firefox (also known as Mozilla) for all my surfing as it's safer and the add on's are fantastic.
