Ultrawides and grad filters

I've read in various places (famous last words!) that it is possible to use Cokin P size (ie 4" x 6") ND grad filters with a 10mm lens so long as you use the single-slot wideangle holder. Is this true? Don't want to order a set of them and then have it not work! I know about the colour cast issue with Cokin filters: I'm planning to buy one of the other brands of Cokin P size grads.

I have these but haven't tried on the 10-24 yet. Might do tonight, now.

with a 77mm adapter, 10mm does not appear to vignette at all with the wide adapater. Only one filter, though....

Cheers - guess I'll just have to be sure to buy a strong enough grad!

I use Cokin P series with my 16-55 which is also 77mm filter size but i do experience vignetting at around 18mm, I`m surprised to hear that a 10mm does not. Mystifying!

I checked it with some white card, tripod, flash and the low profile holder. I was expecting it and didn't see it. I'll try and prove in the big wide world soon enough.

Thanks Anvh You have solved the mystery! I had been using the A series ever since it was first released back in the 70`s/80`s but when i bought my K7 and 16-50/50-135 lenses i used my £60 discount on the battery grip to pay for the P series adaptors /holder and a grad because i saw them on the display stand. I was not aware of a dedicated holder for wideangle as i had anticipated that the P series was good for up to 82mm i gave it no further thought! So thanks again! I`ll order one today!!!

If you still have problems after ordering the Cokin, I don't know if this will solve the problem but it may. I use a Lee wide angle filter adaptor ring and have had no problems with it at all. My wife Fran used to use the normal Lee adaptor ring and at 18mm and she had a few vignette problems and so invested in the Lee wide angle adaptor ring which is not cheap. The Lee wide angle adaptor ring may fit a Cokin holder but I cant' say for sure but if it did I know it would solve your problems.

Hmm, my slight inherent paranoia (and love for all things shiny) is pushing me towards Cokin Z-Pro size filters (Hitech 100mms to be precise)... damned shiny things

I wish i had planned my purchase in advance, I would probably come to the same conclusion! I only bought the K7 and a couple of zooms as a stopgap until we get a Pentax FF so i would probably go for Z knowing what i know now! Still the wideangle holder should cure the immediate problem thanks to Anvh.

these are using the above mentioned slotin holder, and the cokin P121S.

Tamron 10-24@10mm, Pentax k10D, I think ISO 100 (not sure, it's not really relevant).

With grad 1/30@f16, green button says "1/50@f16", which was also too high. UFRaw wanted to bring that down another half stop, I've left it alone.
No curve corrections, saturation up (as usual). No sharpening.













I can really, really see the use of these now, though the grad is a tad too strong for this situation. Will have to see if I can find a softer one for the summer.
