Two new IR ones with a different look

Yesterday I went for a walk at the military cemetery on the site of the old Victoria Hospital at Netley. The weather was mostly dull so not good for the 'glowing' type of IR shots. I thought I'd try some different processing to make them more like old B&W rather than the hyper-detailed look that I normally use.

In the first one is it just me or is there something odd about the visual effect of the dark path and the light grass - looking at the lock of the right hand gate I feel like there is a blind spot on the lower left...

The kit lens is getting out of its depth near the sides in the second one, even at f/8.

Both 1/90th at f/8, ISO 200, modified GX1L with 830nm internal filter.

I like the first one, but the second one looks a bit odd to me with the dark band at the top.

The trees in the background of the second one were a bit messy hence the crop, but I see what you mean...

Number 1 - yes, I also see what looks like a blind spot, and noticed it before you pointed it out (but only when I scrolled the image down to include the bottom of it in my relatively low-resolution laptop display). The contrast between the top of the gates and the grass in the background really struck me (partly because initially I couldn't see the bottom of your image due to low-res laptop display). It might be worth trying an aggressive crop where you lose most of the bottom of the image (try cropping so that you just include the middle horizontal bar in the gates). Number 2 - I like the image, but could you be more aggressive with the crop and just not show any background at all? I've had a quick try and can't quite make it work (my idea was to preserve the feeling of graves disappearing into the distance but remove that distracting black band). The symmetry in the original image (and the feeling of looking at a set of dominoes ready to tumble) has something very powerful about it.

For the first one the dark path is part of the scene but is also an odd distraction, the second crop is also effective but now I feel that something is missing.... I think I'll go back and explore those gates a bit more.

The 'dominoes' was a chance shot in the couple of minutes of hazy sun, I'd like to explore that as well and hopefully find a way to get the background right. Regarding the blurry edges, I've experimented with the Tamron 17-50, and in IR it is considerably sharper at f/2.8 than the kit lens is at any aperture. However, it also has an odd hazy hotspot which becomes very noticeable by a couple of stops down. I'll try the Tamron wide-open for the 'dominoes' shot I think.
