Tripod Max Load

If the QR plate will only take 1.5kg, that looks like being the limiting factor.
Best regards, John

It does look that way doesn't it - which makes it a silly match with the tripod and even its own head!
(Unless perversely thinking - the QR plate weighs 3.5kg so it can only hold 1.5kg giving a max load of 5kg to the head :lol

Oh, I've got a headache now

I've never seen a camera QR plate with a load given. Lens plates yes, but for a camera QR plate no. The QR should sit firmly under the body, and if the body can take the weight of the lens then so should the QR plate take the combined weight OK. Depending on the QR type you can always up grade the plate for little money if you need to. If it is a Arca-Swiss type then I may have one I can let you have for not a lot.
Personally I would prefer the head to match the tripod load a bit more, assuming the head doesn't weigh 3Kg that is.

I think they have that all wrong. Have you seen how much it weighs.. 550g that's close to 1.2 lbs. You will loose the advantage of the lighter tripod!!!!.
Have a look here link As far as I can see Wimberley don't seem to quote Max. Loads for either the clamps or the plates

I really can't see the relevance of a plate load

I think it is nonsense too. None of the given measurable parameters of the plate agree with examples of this exact plate that I have which are :I think they have that all wrong. Have you seen how much it weighs.. 550g that's close to 1.2 lbs.
43 grams in weight and dimensions of 50mm x 42mm & 10mm thick.
While the plate, and head QR mechanism, is perhaps not as nice to use as the Manfrotto equivalent it seems perfectly functional to me.
If we are talking about the RSH-61 ball head it seems daft to have the head, which only comes as a quick release version and therefore includes the plate, specified at 5kg and then have the plate separately specified at a much lower loading. I have certainly loaded this head (and the plate) with a K-5 & Sigma 135-400, which weights in at just over 2kg, and not experienced any problems.
The same plate is used with the larger RSH-12 head as well and that is specified up to 10kg.
It looks like a "cut & past" error when building the web page although that of course does perhaps seed some doubt to the tripod & head specifications as well. Hopefully you will get some clarification from the manufacturer.

I have that small head and QR plate that you linked to Stan. It works fine with limitations. Basically when you put the camera in portrait mode on it, the QR grip isn't very good and so the camera starts to rotate; ie it doesn't hold it firm. I got round it by tightening the QR plate onto the camera using the screw underneath, but with the plate not quite aligned with the camera body. I then used the plate itself to finish tightening, so the plate was then aligned with the body and much tighter. It does mean that if you want to use portrait mode then it is best to have camera mounted with the shutter bottom at the lower end (and thus encouraging the turning action caused by the weight of the lens to further tighten the QR plate and reducing slip.
Once I sussed that out, I have found it a nice little head and I use it with one of the small Giotto's tripods.
I hope that makes sense!
PS - this is with a K5ii and DA17-70. I think its ok with a DA 55-300, but I wouldn't want to rely on it for stability with a big lens on though!

Thanks for all the interest and comments. The measurements on the web page didn't add up, hence the query.
I hadn't seen the part I'm on about yesterday Glyn and know you have used this model "heavy laden".
I've had the same problem with camera rotation with the giottos (tripod and head) Andy and don't take a lot of portrait style images, and the heaviest lens I use is the 18-135mm WR so hopefully I won't get too many problems.
My main criteria for changing tripos it weight reduction.

I have only really used this type of plate attached to a lens on a gimbal head. Has anyone experience of using the camera plates said to prevent the rotation problem?

The red-snapper head is far better than the giottos one that came with the tripod IMHO

Tripod Max Load 8kg
Head Max Load 5kg
QR Plate Max Load 1.5kg
So does the Max Load of the QR Plate negate the Max Load of the other parts.
