Just curious. I have removed the centre column from my tripod as it is tall enough without, and it is one less thing to introduce wobble.
I use that facility quite frequently when shooting photographs of flowers like this.

Following a recommendation in one of the Photography mags I had a good look at a Manfrotto 190X PRO in Jessops a little while ago. Not sure what head to get yet but as soon as I have some spare cash I'll be getting one.

MXV have a secondhand "new boxed" 190 at the moment with head for just under £100. Normally the legs would cost at least that much.

190 legs are around £85 - £95, depending on whether you get the 'classic' or the 'ProB' type. But depending on the head you'd get with it, that looks like it may well be a bargain.

I'm new to this game (although my old camera is also a Pentax, a P30) and recently bought a Slik 700 DX tripod for £84.99. It's a bit 'industrial' and very heavy, but solid enough to mount a small telescope (6" reflector) and that's saying something.

I have shot a lot of leaves (some my daughter picked up outisde) this way.
I just find it's easy to rotate the center column - and gives some very good handling.
I took some good shots of some cards too. I placed them on our dinner table and needed the camera to point down . This way you can avoid hand held in low light conditions.
I like the tripod to be as flexible as possible.
