trigger flash

With there now being two models without built-in flash would the dinky AF201 FG be a good substitute? I am thinking of a 'just in case' portable unit for fill-in flash and also whether it would work like a built-in flash as a trigger to a larger remote unit. Any views?

The AF201 does not function as a P-TTL controller (or slave), so you cannot use automatic off-camera flash exposure. If you have another flashgun (such as the Pentax AF-540FGZ or AF-360/540 FGZII models) that have a ' dumb slave' (SL2) mode, then using the AF201 in manual mode you will be able to trigger the slaves ... Only manual exposure though.

Other third party flashes (such as the Cactus RF60) have this 'dumb' optical slave mode, so it could be done economically. But its not ideal, as the AF201 will be emitting light that illuminates, not working as a true ' controller'. You'd have to either use the light from it, it direct it away from the scene and only towards the optical space.

Sorry, meant to finish the last post with ' direct it towards the optical slave' ...

I think there's an expectation and perception, naturally, that this small flash, which came out around the time that Pentax released its first DSLRs without built-in flashes, would serve as a handy, pocketable, replacement ...

Unfortunately, whilst handy and pocketable, it's not a true full replacement for the more sophisticated built-in types that offer wireless P-TTL master and controller functioning.
