Hi Mike, In the first shot - what does the roof bring to the party?
I was including it to try and add a sense of size / scale.
Does it ont work and does it detract form the pic?

I think the first focus point is best. I would make the verticals vertical and crop/clone out the roof, and perhaps go for a tighter portrait crop.
All grey skies here today and a howling wind

It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera they are made with the eye, heart and head. Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Aren't yellow and blue complimentary colours or something? That's why the contrast is so strong.
That sky...we never get that depth of blue at these latitudes, even on a nice day!
Strong graphic images.

Thanks guys,
Do you mean like this or crop the cab out completely and just leave the boom in?

It's a pity you got that tree to the right of the crane in shot number 3 (is it clone-able?), the angle of the crane works better for me in that one (assuming you would crop out the house).

I did however stuggle to pick a point to focus on, I couldn't work out which was best either the end of the crane or the middle.
Focus on the end of the boom

close to the cab

Different angle with more house in an effort to convey the size of the crane better.
