Tones and Textures

Here's a set which I've been working on over the past few days. Playing with texture, tone, light and focus. All with K100 and either 35mm or 28mm manual focus lens. I'd be interested to see what you think of them.

Sorry about the titles: not good but they help differentiate them.

Andrew as all ways a great set I like the peg and hook the best and then a close second the oak and iron

How do you do it.......? do you walk around dressed as a less fortunate person and ask for all the best hang outs

No. 3 I find a little difficult to decode, have to look twice to discover the iron part. Maybe it would have been better in colour?

Otherwice a nice set, sharp and well exposed.

I'm for the pegs one and then oak and iron .

Both are fascinating

I like the others - but they , to me , are not as appealing

Very graphic shots. No 3 would be strengthened by trimming the right hand edge - the distant background adds nothing to the shot but competes for attention.

An interesting set - worth a long look I love the texture of the coarse fabric in the first one but I think my favourite is Oak and Iron. Excellent work as usual.

Good stuff Andrew! They work very well together as a set.

Split is the one I like least, the large black areas are obtrusive, and the focus or something seems a little fuzzy (that could just be the way the material of the split looks though). I particularly like Oak and Iron, especially the light on and around the handle. Nice tones in Pegs and Hook too.

Oak and Iron (as caveated by John R), along with Weathered would be my picks Andrew. The latter could do with less detail in the shadows, to make them really black and featureless.

Bench and lichen would nearly be my runner up, the background detail is not quite out of focus enough. I see that you were getting up into high shutter speed territory with this, so perhaps some -Ev and get the aperture opened right up?

Thanks everyone, and to think I hestiated about posting these. Just goes to show!

John, i-Berg and Terry: the iron refers to the bolts, bent over nails and staples used to hold this 15th Century door together. It's in the south porch of St. Mary's, Weston Zoyland near where the Battle of Sedgemoor was fought. I wondered about the right hand edge but wanted to keep the latch in shot. However, I do see your point and a crop would strengthen the picture.

I-Berg I agree with your comments about Bench and Lichen. Not blurred enough. It was a bright day in full sun. I was struggling to shoot at 2.8 this was stopped down slightly and the shutter speed was in the region of 4000th I think! (However do you manage in Australia? It's a rare problem here!)

thoughton: trust someone to notice Worn! It's not sharp and here there was the opposite problem: 800 ASA, hand held, wide aperture and focus slightly off. The quality of my LCD screen is not good enough to check critical focus, I'm afraid.

Pete, behind the door is one of the best tie-beam roofs in the county and some good medieval bench ends!
Best wishes,

Andrew

Andrew, as interesting as these shots are, especially the Oak and Iron, I feel you've been spending too much time messing about with that camera, while neglecting the obvious routine maintenance around the house. You need to paint that wall and fence, oil the door and garden seat, and don't get me started on that threadbare lounge.

Thanks, Gareth and Sam.
Sam, have you been talking to Mrs C. by any chance?

Here's a version which forever will be known as "JR's Crop", and, yes, it is much better. The latch and slice of interior were, in the end, irrelevant.
