The River Don - Sheffield

The River Don has been a constant in my life, I've always lived within a short walk to its bank. In the 1980s it had the unenviable title of being one of the most polluted rivers in Europe, primarily because it flows through the industrial heartland of South Yorkshire, cutting through the City of Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster before joining the Ouse and finally into the Humber.

Thankfully it is much cleaner these days with fish & wildlife returning and the foam that used to blow off it onto your clothes long gone. One thing that's never changed is its smell, not overly foul, peat like with an industrial twist.

Anyway a few photos from its course in Sheffield... oh and Jarvis Cocker!

Nice one!

I bumped into Jarvis out of the blue a few years back it was like a clashing of the socially awkward, neither of us really knowing what to say, so we pretty much parted on a hello and handshake.
