Seems incredible for handheld! If it was handheld I'm guessing the 1.7x TC autofocussed successfully, which is pretty impressive as well Very high shutter speed too, considering all those TCs. And I would have expected the detail to be much worse given the two TCs, so well done

Thanks Tim - I should have said that I turned off Autofocus, the AF adapter did work but it was hunting a lot and I wasn't convinced it was sharp.
I did try a few shots a few nights earlier with a 300mm A * lens and the AF1.7x converter, but the results were not a patch on this combination.
I did try adding a 1.5x Teleplus SHQ on Saturday, but the conditions weren't as good and I couldn't hold it steady enough. I will try again soon.
The Pentax SR mechanism is imho superb, and a feature that is often undersold.

Hi Mike - No processing because I'm not particularly good at it. I did play around with sharpening and contrast (I agree this is where it would benefit) in Picasa, but the results were poor. I do have PSP X2 Ultimate but have not fully got to grips with it yet.

Ah right .. you will find it makes a great deal of difference once you start playing around a bit.
These 2 started off looking very much like yours
Sigma 100-300mm f4 with 2x Sigma teleconverter (hand held)
Pentax 300mm f2.8 with Pentax 2x-L and AF 1.7x teleconverters (hand held).
