I thought this would make interesting viewing - 8 manufacturers compared in a non scientific test of SOCC JPEGS.

Lots of gear - but not a lot of idea!

I don't want to spoil the results for anyone, but if you haven't got 20 minutes to spare, they are:

Overall, collated scores for the set of photos.
#1 - Nikon
#2 - Canon
#3 - Panasonic
#4 - Fuji
#5 - Olympus
#6 - Sony
#7/#8 Tie - iPhone 7/ Pentax

Obviously not a great result for Pentax !!
Surely one downside must be the fact that different lenses render differently?
An impossible scenario, but the only true test of a sensor would be using the same lens for all 8 manufacturers?
Lots of gear - but not a lot of idea!

I would also like a test on what bread toasts best. That's how meaningful this is.

Back to my RAW, or adjusting the JPEG settings.

Cheers!

Comparing JPEG output from different makes of cameras is as daft as pixel peeping them

Ricehigh's settings for the K-5

Sharpness should be set quite high +4 or +5

It's hard to understand how you can set a level field for that really. It's impossible to know the baseline, default strengths for each processing parameter that every camera designer has programmed in ...... In other words, all zeros are not equal.

The only meaningful type of test I could think up would be where an image was captured and the best look created by setting adjustments on the first camera .... Then subsequently they try to get the same look on the other cameras, and rate how difficult each was to achieve or where it was not possible to achieve something given the limitations of the setting sliders available.

But ultimately, even that test comes down to ' how I like my photos to look' .....

I enjoyed watching this. Most interesting and possibly useful for those who like Jpegs, although, I guess you can alter camera settings in you like. I just like being able to recover highlight detail from RAW files.
Best wishes,

Andrew
