What I have come to realize is that the photographer must be adept in a much wider range of disciplines than was acceptable only a few years ago. He/She must be a photographer an intermediate art director, retouch artist and visionary. The importance of being a good communicator is also a vital part of the profession. Even if one has an agent the importance of this diversification can't be understated.

What are your impressions about where the photographer is today?

Gerri and I find ourselves:
creating images and stories in still and video.
we do lighting, capture, post, editing, graphic design, music, sound, printing, web design.
marketing, sales, service. Bookkeeping, secretarial, and janitorial.
I think it will be nice when we can afford to hire a production team.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

And on top of all that everyone seems to want it done for less money than before.

People think that because it is digital there is a lot less work flow involved and anyone could do it. You may not spend time in the darkroom with chemicals but there is a lot to do once you finish a shoot and need to develop your files. It can take quite some time and effort to get right.
