The Dreaded Fungas

I've just discovered the tell tale filigree of fungus in one of my lenses.

The bad news is it's my Sigma 50-500

I suspect Sigma will charge me and arm and a leg to give it a clean, assuming it's not etched it's way into the glass yet.

I'm hoping someone can recommend a business or individual who does reasonable lens cleans.

EDIT: sorry that's Fungus not Fungas

I have found Sigma to be normally pretty reasonable for repairs but I did get Alan Marlow to de-fungi ? a Sigma lens for me a few years ago and he did a very good job.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

53 per hour labour charge:

If it's easy to get to i.e front or rear optics then hopefully it won't rack up?

53 per hour......but how long is it going to take to strip and clean the 50-500, then reassemble and check/calibrate etc

Although this is the non HSM version so probably a tad easier.

Maybe a call to them might shed light on a rough price?

I am pretty sure it will be covered under tariff 7 at 131.99. I've sent a 70-200 f2.8 off to them twice for a friend and both times they charged tariff 6, the second time they even changed the whole barrel.

Consider the following, but do NOT attempt this one on your own.

Depending upon how close one lives to a good college and/or university, especially one with a good science department. Certain types of higher end (focusable) lasers are able to fix most fungus issues on a variety of lenses, even despite how many groups and elements there are.

Also, depending upon where one lives and IF there are such things as mostly sunny skies... Try burning it off with the sun and/or a magnifying glass of sorts

Well the lens arrived back yesterday from Alan Marlow and all is well, and cheaper than a couple of hours with Sigma which included return postage
