I was given a Zenith camera for my 18th birthday. I loved it, but didn't really understand it.
When it broke I was too broke to get a replacement, so went without for quite a while. Then I got a P&S which was OK but frustrating. When we drove Route 66 it really annoyed me, and since we were buying our youngest son an SLR for his 18th I bought one too. The man in the shop in Albuquerque recommended Pentax so that's what we bought, for my son and for me.

For me it was back in the late 60's when my father got an award for some pictures. I was not only taken in to the pictures but also by how many people where looking to him for more of the same.
That was really the time when I understood the power a picture can have.
I took pictures before that but was never really thinking of what was in it.
After that night I could not know enough of what a picture should be telling and my journey started.
Now, over 40 years later I am still on that journey.
I guess once you start the on the journey you will never stop and always go forward and you never stop learning.

Pentax K1000, cost me £120 used in about 1996. Still have it, but haven't used it for ages. The KX/MX are much better!

My first camera had belonged to my mother and I was permitted to take it to Switzerland in 1958 - it was a little baby Brownie - and square black thing with a little lever [ IIRC ] below the lens which was actually the shutter button.

Can't remember what happened to it .
Once I was married I was permitted to use himself's cameras occasionally - a Boots Amica , which was replaced by the tiny Pentax 110 , which in its turn was replaced by a Fuji S5000zoom .
I then acquired a Kodak P&S which was all mine
Sadly both the Kodak and the Fuji expired in 2009 and in December 2009 I got my K-x

When I grew up, my backyard neighbor was a very well known photographer for a Montreal newspaper, and he also did general photography work on week-ends. When I was about twelve, he started showing me how to develop films and do prints. I found that fascinating. So, as time went by, he thought me how to use the cameras, 35mm, 6 X 6 and large format. As time went by, I started assisting him for weddings and studio work. Then, after a few years, he sent me on my own.
And I kept on going, like the Energizer bunny...

For me it was a Peacock that try as I might I could not take a picture of with the P&S camera I had at the time, and that night the journey began by searching the internet.....
To me and I am confident in saying to me alone a special picture.
