Testing old Takumars

Hi Guys,
My LBA of old glass has resulted in three 1:3.5/28 lenses.
They are all m42, one is the 49mm filter and the other two are the
yummy looking 58mm.
I want to keep one
How can I set up some test to decide which ?
I presume a tripod and same settings is a given.
What sort of image should I compare and what performance would I be looking for ?

You could use a tripod to minimise any external factors in your test. I would use a subject reasonable close with a "distant background so you can see how they handle OOF detail. Run a series of exposures at diiferent apertures. However, this is not the way you would usually aim to use these so I would also run a set of exposures in general use of the type of subjects you normally photograph.

Which lenses are they? The earlier Super Takumars had a 58mm thread. Both had 7 elements in 6 groups. The only real difference between them was the min aperture. The first one could be stooped down to F22 and the later model F16. These were replaced with a 7 element/7 group design firstly in Super Takumar format which was then updated to SMC standard. If one of them is the SMC version, this is likely to be the better one with more flare resistance.

Thanks for that I will try your suggestions.
They are all Super Takumars with one of the 58mm going to f22 and the other to f16 as you say. The 49mm one is f16 . No SMC .
The big ones look really great with that nice big front element. I suppose they might benefit from a lens hood.
