Teleconverters - again!

Some notes about early converters which work with SDM that I found by experience:

There's no way of setting the SR to the required focal length, the camera automatically detects the FL of the master lens and no way to override it.

When hand held the DA*300 tends to hunt just either side of the focus point due to body movement and very shallow DoF with a converter fitted, at least this is my experience.

Both the above can be overcome with a sufficiently sturdy tripod/head and a reasonably fast shutter speed, the latter being a requirement to freeze subject movement in wildlife photography anyway in my experience.

I hope this is of some help.

Hi, its me again

I have just had a long discussion with SRS who were very helpful to the extent of getting a Kenko 1.4 (no 1.5 in stock), K-5 and DA*300 together and the combination drove the K-5 mad. Their advice is that there is NO teleconverter that works with the SDM DA*300 to give AF.

I appear to be back at the beginning!

Comments anyone?

and Hi - it's me again! If SRS would be kind enough to let me have the DA* for another week for nothing I can go in the shop and prove it!! To clarify my Kenko is not new. I bought it used three years ago.It is the Pz-AF 1.5X Teleplus MC KENKO (in white) DG (in gold). It has 5 contacts, a gap then a 6th. I just put it on and it worked, albeit a bit slower. Not sure if it was using the screw drive or the HSM. Worked on the Sigma 150-500mm as well.
Hope this helps,
Dave

It does not say SHQ on it anywhere so there are clearly minor variants. I just put it on and it worked, albeit a bit slower. Not sure if it was using the screw drive or the HSM. i cannot find the manufacturer ,but i have a Jessop badged MC 1.7X Pz/AF
tele-converter made in japan. it has the 7 contacts plus the sdm contacts, tried on my DA*16-50 and it works including af, only tried in a not very bright room and it hunted, when there was decent contrast difference it found focus, as i say i tried to find who made it but no luck.

It's another Kenko/Teleplus clone AFAIK, I've seen one or two.
