Tamron v Sigma

I notice in this week's AP that Tamron are bringing out a 10-24mm, no doubt competing against the Sigma 10-20mm. I wonder how the Tamron will compare? I recently bought a s/h Sigma on ebay for my trip to Iceland next week, it had only been used a couple of times, bought it for under £280 so I was well pleased but will keep an eye on the Tamron though.

personally, I have been a little underwhelmed by noth companies both in terms of IQ and QA. Sharp perhaps (if you get a nice one) but dull and uninteresting otherwise. Sigma = yellow and Tamron = earth tones.

You'll find loads of pics on the net taken with a Sigma 10-20mm that are brilliant and fascinating. Any slight colour cast can be corrected, if you even notice it.

I'm hoping the Tamron 10-24 will be at least as good, because the extra range would be useful.

I think it will boil down to pricing, as to the best seller.

When I bought my K10D (my first DSLR) around 6 months ago I was offered a Sigma 10-20mm for £200, a few months old and used around 5 times.
I refused because I knew nothing about it.

Now I know better I really do kick myself when I see photos taken with the lens

The web is hardly the place to judge a lens for colour, or any other characteristic for that matter. A good photo on the other hand is down to the person on the other side of the camera.

I'm just going on what I see when I take shots side by side between Sigma, Tamron and Pentax lenses. You probably wouldnt notice otherwise.

I have Sigma, Tamron and Pentax lenses and notice very little difference in colour between them*. You can easily correct or tweak the colours anyway. I do not agree with you Steve that the image quality of Sigma and Tamron lenses is uninteresting - and you can sometimes tell that from images on the web, some of which are 100% crops.

Anyway, Pentax does not provide rectilinear 10mm, so if you want that, the choice will have to be between Sigma and Tamron. Certaninly the angle is interesting, to say the least.

Of course a good photo is down to the person on the other side of the camera, and they don't need better than a Sigma or Tamron lens to get it.

* An exception was a much older MF Sigma 24mm that had a strong cyan cast.
