I will be taking team pictures again on Sat. If I set the camera to auto and the flash to auto, it won't go foo and the kids are too dark. If I set the flas to TAV, then I need to play with the apeture. I don't have the manual for the flash. Is there another setting which might be easier?

errr... shoot with the flash on Manual with a diffuser on? I never trust flash metering.

Take what the camera thinks (like 1/100@f, change the flash to 1/4 power and see what happens. Work from there, IMO.

Hmmmm what flash and camera do you have?
That would be nice to know if you want to get advice what settings to use
Also what settings is the flash set on and your metering (spot, average, matrix?)

Also which lens and what distance of your subjects do we talk about and is it inside or outside?

Also, put the camera in program not Auto. I was advised this by a pro-photographer who does a lot of flash group/individual photography. a diffuser will also be needed (such as a stofen)as without the light from the flash will be too narrow to get everyone in. Also, put the ISO at 200-400, 200 if it a bright day outside 400 if you are inside with plenty of light. I have done this, including a group of 30 people and it works.

As an example. this was done it ISO 500 (it was overcast and a lot of people) F11 and 18mm. There is a little fall off in sharpness at the ends, but for the purpose for which it was needed it was fine.
