Super Multi Coated 35mm f3.5 Question

Hi Mac,
This lens is generaly considered to be one of the best Pentax made and the K mount version tends to be much sought after. Thr F2 version is more expensive and faster but if anything the 3.5 is a better performer. $60 is probably not a bad price from a dealer with warranty but a bit on the pricey side for a private sale.
Regards
Kim

Kim,
Forgot to say the 35mm lens in question is M42, not K. Still good? I believe there is also a 35mm Super Tak 3.5 screw in the mix for the same money - older and not SMC, but other than coating, are the optics the same?
Sorry for the confusion!
Cheers

Hi Mac,
I assumed it was the M42. The K mount was basically the same lens updated with the neew mount but the optics were the same. The later ones had modified optics and didn't perform quite as well. Because they were short lived, they are more uncommon hence the high price.
The optics for many of the SMCs were the same and the only difference was the coating. This is not always the case and they are a few exceptions when there are 2 versions of the SMC. If there are 2 versions of the Super Tac, the SMC was generally a coated version of the latter. (If that makes sense ) there were 2 versions of the 35/3.5, the early one had min aperture of F22 whereas the later one and the SMC one was F16.
The later Super Tak was considered better and the SMC better still because of the flare resistance. I would go for the SMC unless you want to use it on other M42 bodies such as the Fujicas because the full aperture pin will get in the way. The SMC one will give full aperture metering on the SPF

It all depends on what condition it's in As long long as the glass is clear and it works mechanically, it's a good price.

I have a shot at a 35mm f3.5 open apature focusing Super Multi Coated lens in very near mint condition and at about $60.00 US.
I realize this is not a "fast" lens, but how does it stand up as far as clarity in the middle appatures, etc. I'd love to have a brighter version of a 35mm, but fear the price and availabilty may preclude.
Many thanks
