I'm sorry, but that doesn't really qualify as "Stupid" in my books.
A mistake, yes.
It's only stupid, if you did the same thing last week, and the week before.... and failed to learn anything from it.

You can't learn without making mistakes, but you can't learn making the same mistakes all the time. I've done that too.

I have made that mistake also. And i also found even with the hood removed you still get a shadow although not as pronounced. Whilst at a drinks reception on HMS Warrior, I managed to 'escape' to take some photographs (some of these images are posted under 'Your Photos').

I guess that you might get away with it with the kit lens but the 16-50 is a big lens.
I was trying to travel light with just two lenses, since the event was supposed to be a drinks reception rather than a photo shoot and there was nowhere secure to leave anything.

I made a similar one using the built-in flash on my *istDL2-only the offending object wasn't the lens hood, it was my finger, unsure quite how I managed that one!!!

My stupid mistake is when shooting portrait with the built in flash to put my hand in the way when holding the camera............... and I've done it more than once!
K100D Super, 18-55, 50-200, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 70mm macro and lots of old lenses

No you can't - at least not at 18mm I guess that you might get away with it with the kit lens . . .
