Studio lighting

Hi folks, I was hoping that some one who knows about studio lighting could have a look at this and see if this set up is any good, I have a bicycle for sale on an irish classifieds site at €450. This guy has offered me this studio lighting kit without the 150 strobe for my bike. What do you think ?

90cm x 90cm soft-box
Heavy duty air cushioned stand
Light duty lighting stands ( x 2) non air cushioned
Backdrops 2.7mtrs white and black complete with three roll support brackets, chains, alum core for paper rolls
Continuous lights x 2 / 150watt 5500k lamps
2 Umbrellas
Reflector support stand

All in perfect condition

Personally I would stick to selling your bike for £450. If you then add another £150 to £200 you will be able to buy some new lighting kit which would be better than what is being offered above.

Buying second hand lighting kit like other photographic equipment you are taking a risk and some times you win other times you loose.

Having cash in your hand will provide you with choices. You can buy better lighting modifiers such as Phottix kit for very reasonable prices online which will give you better control and results in relation to your light.

Thanks a lot guys, complete novice when it comes to lighting (and everything else)!
I was originally going to put the money towards a K3 but I might just hold on for a bit and get some lighting.
I have an empty shop unit that I might try set up as some kind of studio.

Keep the bike and buy Elinchrom or Bowens

Depending on what you want to photograph, a continuous lighting system might be worth investigating. When photographing pets, which move very quickly and erratically without warning, a continuous lighting kit is worth gold. Your DSLR can follow the subject, and the light meter will compensate for any change of lighting.

And, to top it off, since the continuous lighting system is NOT a point light, you don't need to carry as large a softbox to get soft light.

Also, with a continuous lighting system, what you see is what you get.

All in all, both flash and continuous lights have their use. So it's worth looking carefully into what you intend to photograph with a studio set-up before committing to a system.
