Give it time. I suspect quite a lot of us find it a difficult style. Not least in my case, since it's not trivial to overcome the nervousness associated with carrying a camera about in public.

Killing time - waiting for a bus




As has been mentioned, it takes a bit of nerve to get out on the street and get snapping. I've adopted the technique of just having the camera hanging down by my side, pointing it in the right direction and pressing the button. On a busy street no-one notices the shutter sound. You soon get a reasonable hit rate as long as the lens is wide enough. In a busy city centre you can get very, very close to people to fill the frame even with a 10mm lens. Pre-focus at about 1m on MF, set aperture to f/8 and rely on the huge DoF to keep things in focus. AF slows things down too much and gets confused at such close range with subjects crossing rapidly. As soon as you lift the camera to your eye, or people notice you with a cam pointing in their direction, their behaviour changes.

There is no reasons to nerve while you takeing a photo on the street. Belive me, it is 1% chance that someone tell you something offensive or will try to hurt you. No way.
Beside, the most important thing is frameing consciously because this way will give you a maximum satisfaction

In my extremely limited experience (one outing), people were generally very kind, if snapped and then smiled at. Of course, being a female, that M.O. works for quite a few situations

I agree that the chance of getting hurt is slim, but even if people don't hurt you, they will behave differently, they may well not want their picture taken and hide their face or react in some other negative way. I want to take pictures of people going about their everyday lives without reacting to an "intrusion" of the camera/photographer.

I know what you mean. Probably the worest thing is when people give you a smile, haha. Other way you must be faster than their reaction on your camera. Street photography is some kind of freestyle. No rules!
