Still learning

Really struggling to get the exposure right when shooting (not literally!!) my liver and white Springer on a sunny day.The liver colours seem fine but the white bits are blown......how do I overcome this? This is exactly as it came out of the camera apart from a bit of a crop!

I am not sure this one is just over exposed on the white bits - I think it is generally a bit over exposed although more clearly seen in the white areas.

Always difficult with an animal with this sort of colouring. The only tip I can give you is to meter for the bright areas as it is always easier to lighten any under exposed area than to darken any blown highlights. Or if he sits still long enough - try bracketing or HDR

That said - this shot is not nearly as blown as you think - yes there are some blown areas but a lot of detail can be recovered. Hope you don't mind but I gave it a 5 second tweak in LR to show you. The original colouring around his face and ears could have been preserved if processed properly

To lower the whole exposure ( which would work here) you set an 'exposure compensation' amount, for example -0.5 stops,

For camera JPEGs you could set 'highlight correction' to active . This will compress the dynamic range a little, pulling the highlights down.

Your camera is a new model, so it would be interesting to hear and see how these options work for you. The controls may be a little different to the older models.
