Sticky Shutter button on my K20D

Hi Everyone,

The other day after a shoot we were all having a deserved drink and i managed to spill a tiny bit of beer on the shutter button. Didn't think the liquid went in but it has. So next day it shutter got sticky. Any idea what would be best way to dissolve the sticky substance.

I can't open the camera up, I'm guessing the weather sealing is preventing water getting inside camera but it just under the shutter button/switch and it needs flicking back and forth to get it going every day. Button itself is not bad but the preview action really get stuck.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it were me I'd swab the area around the shutter button with a cotton bud soaked in water/washing-up liquid, then dry it off with a hairdryer.

The sealing should prevent any water getting to sensitive parts but you need the Fairy Liquid to dissolve the sugary gloop left by the beer - do it fairly quick and dry it straight away to minimise the chances of anything soaking through.

Good luck!

That is a super good idea Hefty. I will give that a go today.

Thank you.

Fairy liquid to the rescue

I use my camera so much that this little annoyance is not making me happy.

Try a whisky chaser, the alcohol might dissolve the beer

Or drink the whisky which wouldn't actually help the button but you would not feel so bad about it.

Use Irish or American whiskey on the button, and reward yourself with a proper dram from people who know what they are doing.

A good Scotch Whisky is better. And it stops your gums turning purple!

Actually meths would be the better option as there less (and I'm going to get battered for this:blush impurities in it.

You are truly a child of the modern age. Your impurities are my flavour.

Being serious I think I'd try some of the eclipse lens cleaning fluid I have. Just a drop or so to try and flush out the goo. Drip in and then vigorous blow out.

I would be concerned that any real alcohol etc. might affect the weather seal. If I wasn't then I have some Hammerite thinner I use as a ultimate sanction for degreasing and in this case degunking (and there's a thought that wonderful stuff Gunk!).

As many others have I have washed out a keyboard under warm water that had hot chocolate spilt on it and let it dry. It was fine after careful drying in the airing cupboard.

When they're in a drink, they are flavours.

When they are in cleaning fluid...

Back to being serious, you could try a product called 'Sticky Stuff Remover'.
