You could try fixing it yourself. You can download a copy of the service manual here: http://www.robertstech.com/pentax.htm or there is another on my wbsite here: http://pentax-manuals.com/manuals/service/servicemanuals.htm
If you still want a repairer in London, I would suggest you speak to Robin at Harrow Technical who is a Pentax specialist http://www.harrowtechnical.co.uk/ However the prices you have quoted are not unreasonable. Another alternative is to post the camera to Mike Spencer. He is the most reasonable in cost that I have come across and a full CLA and service will only be about the price you quoted. If nothing has been done to the camera, it is likely that the seals are either going or about to go and a full service will sort all this out. £23 is a very good price for an SP500 in good condition. Unless you buy a camera of that age from a specialist it is rare to get one that doesn't need at least some work on it. Fully serviced ones go for £60 and more so although you could get another cheap one, I would bite the bullet and have yours serviced. At least then you will know that it will be good for 10 years or so.

Don't know what postage would cost, but Eric Hendrickson, in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee (a retired head of the Pentax repair department) does excellent work for very reasonable prices. He does a complete CLA, including meter photo cells for $60USD.
You could email him at [email protected]">[email protected] and ask him what he'd charge to fix the broken meter knob.

I am new to the group, have been using m42 screw mount lenses for a while, had a Zenit camera, but got sick of its unreliablity and viewfinder, and had the sense to get a Pentax sp500, an excellent camera. It worked well but the light meter knob came off some time ago, and I liked the light meter quite a bit, impressed with it's accuracy. I went to Camera City in London and they wanted 10 pounds to take a look at it even, and then another place where they wanted 35 pounds to fix it. Anyone know a cheaper place in London? How much should it cost? I paid 23 pounds for the camera, so paying £35 for fixing it seems too much. I'd rather buy new Takumar lenses with that money. Cheers.
