Interesting reading. (PDF).
Reading between the lines I think Sony regret discontinuing the Minolta range and are now looking to slowly take over Olympus?

Sony still wants to take over the photography world.... interesting.... any other small brands they need to buy up?
Ricoh? Pentax? lol!
tells you there's a market for the smaller cameras. Hope Pentax get's it's mirrorless models ramped up for serious competition... whatI'd give for a Panasonic g3 crossed with a Pentax k-01 hybrid baby......
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

First of all this transaction is far from a merger. Sony will take a stake of around 11.5% in Olympus, which is in the range of a typical Japanese cross-shareholding, used to cement relationships and serve as an anti-takeover defense. Undoubtedly the latter is a handy thing for Olympus given the recent corporate scandals.

Secondly the substance of the deal is related to medical devices:

Quote:
The two companies will set up a joint venture by the end of this year to develop, make and sell new endoscopes and other medical devices. Sony will hold 51 percent of the venture and Olympus 49 percent.

What is clear from the Pentax moves and the Olympus moves is that endoscopes are where the money is, along with probably other medical imaging products.
