Bonney & me (I'll have to start calling myself Clyde) went to Hensol Woods yesterday, on a bug hunt with my new (to me) DOI ring flash. The wind was against us and so some of these are slightly blurred.

The plain red ladybird takes my fancy, with the ugly duckling (bugling?) at No. 10 as 2nd. Are plain red ladybirds common?

Great shots Steve,

The 'red ladbird' is a Poplar Leaf Beetle Chrysomela populi.

No. 10 is a female Scorpion Fly - the males have scorpion shaped tails.

No. 12 isn't going to turn into anything it's a Male Macro Moth - Nemophoria degeerella I think. They difficult ones to get I can never get the antennae in focus as well as the body.

Kind regards

Charlotte

Thanks guys,
Charlotte, thanks for the info ... Scorpion Fly, that makes sense as Bonney (another Steve) was with me and managed to get the male and yes it did resemble a scorpion's backend. No. 12 is a Macro moth, quite apt really (btw I mentioned tuning not turning :wink
Do you happen to have any links to any good sites where I can get some identification on the bugs I'm shooting (metaphorically of course)

Sorry that'll teach me to read properly.

I've got a stack of books I use mostly - I do insect and butterfly surveys for the French National Natural History Museum so I know quite a few without looking them up.

This is a good one for Shield bugs - they shed their skins after each instar so they look different to the adults;

This is one I use if I get stuck - it's French but then I live in France and there are some fantastic photos on there;

Moths;

If you ever get stuck with identification feel free to ask I might be able to help.

Kind regards

Nice shots

You seem to have a strange effect on insects most seem to start going for it when you turn up
